A Feel You Recognize Before You Can Name It
Groove is a notoriously hard thing to pin down on paper. Musicologists only began seriously analyzing the concept in the 1990s, generally describing it as an intuitive sense of rhythmic patterning, a cycle in motion created when a band's rhythm section locks together tightly enough to set listeners dancing or tapping their feet without being told to. Funk and Latin musicians call it being "in the pocket," while jazz players talk about a session really cooking or swinging. The term lives mostly outside classical music, attached instead to funk, soul, fusion and rock, and it found a particularly devoted audience in 1980s London, where the rare groove movement built entire club nights around DJs digging up obscure, soulful funk and jazz-funk records from the 1960s and 70s.

FIP itself launched in Paris in 1971 as a commercial-free antidote to city noise, earning its reputation by mixing jazz, rock, chanson, electronic and soul music into one eclectic signal, hand-picked track by track rather than sorted by algorithm.
