A Boston University station that grew into an NPR power player

WBUR was founded in 1950 and has operated as Boston University's public radio station ever since, according to the station's own history page. Its identity as a serious news outlet took shape gradually: in 1980 it began receiving NPR programming by satellite, and by 1982 it had built out a full news identity, running Morning Edition and All Things Considered on weekdays alongside local reporting produced by its own staff.

Two national programs built in Boston

What sets WBUR apart from most NPR member stations is how much of its programming travels far beyond Massachusetts. Here & Now began at WBUR in 1997 and expanded into a two-hour daily newsmagazine produced jointly with NPR starting in 2013. On Point launched in 2001 and has been hosted by Meghna Chakrabarti, syndicated nationally by American Public Media. Together, those two programs alone reach more than six million listeners a week across the country, according to figures cited on the station's about page, a scale most local public radio stations never come close to.
