Всесоюзное радио exists because a podcast about Russian electronic music got shut down. That is not a metaphor. The station's parent project started as a podcast, ran into administrative trouble, and its founder decided to build a radio station instead of giving up.

A Podcast That Got Blocked, Then Became a Syndicate

Cassiopeia Station, the network that runs Всесоюзное радио, was founded by Vitaly Vetrov in the winter of 2020, growing out of a podcast he had launched that February to promote Russian electronic music, according to the network's own account of its founding. When that podcast was blocked, Vetrov and his collaborators decided to try building a small internet radio station instead, starting with music from composer Andrey Klimkovsky before bringing in other Russian electronic artists through NEANE Records.

One Piece of a Very Strange Portfolio

What began as a single electronic music stream grew into a genuine radio syndicate covering an unusually wide spread of formats: a science channel featuring popular lectures, a disco station devoted to 70s and 80s hits, a perestroika and 90s music channel, a space-rock and synthpop station, and even a gardening channel, alongside Всесоюзное радио's own archive of Soviet-era broadcasts and songs. Всесоюзное радио is the history piece of that lineup, built specifically to preserve and replay programming and music from the Soviet Union rather than curate a modern retro playlist inspired by it.

A Time Machine, Not Just a Retro Playlist

The station bills itself as a time machine that transports listeners back into the USSR, running Soviet-era transmissions and songs around the clock for an audience the network describes as mostly older listeners who want to occasionally revisit the past. That framing sets it apart from a generic retro station built around 60s and 70s hits from any country; Всесоюзное радио specifically sources programming tied to the Soviet period rather than treating retro as an interchangeable genre.

Free Access, No Subscription Required

Consistent with the rest of the Cassiopeia Station portfolio, Всесоюзное радио streams free around the clock with no subscription or registration required, keeping the same accessible model the network built its science, disco and gardening channels around. That consistency suggests a network run on the same nonprofit-adjacent logic across every one of its channels, regardless of how far apart their subject matter sits.

A blocked podcast about electronic music turned into a network broad enough to include gardening tips and Soviet nostalgia under the same roof, and Всесоюзное радио is the piece of that story built to make sure the USSR-era archive doesn't disappear along with the decade it documents.
