Belgium's Alternative Rock Radio

Listen Now

Studio Brussel plays alternative rock, hip-hop, house, and techno live from Belgium, and you can hear it free on Radio Shuffle wherever you are. Run by Flemish public broadcaster VRT, it has spent more than four decades carving out space on Belgian radio for music that mainstream stations left alone.

From a rush-hour experiment to a national station

Studio Brussel began broadcasting on 1 April 1983 as a regional Brussels station under BRT, the Dutch-language public broadcaster that later became VRT, according to Wikipedia's entry on the station. It launched narrowly, airing only during rush hour, with Paul De Wyngaert and Jan Hautekiet as its first presenters. Broadcasting hours expanded gradually until the station could be heard across all of Flanders, evolving from a local experiment into one of Belgium's most recognizable radio brands, still known for an edgier, less mainstream approach than its VRT sister stations.

The festival broadcaster of record

Every summer, Studio Brussel positions itself as the on-air home of Belgium's biggest music festivals. The station provides live coverage of Rock Werchter, an annual festival running since 1976 near Leuven, alongside Pukkelpop near Hasselt and the Graspop Metal Meeting, streaming different stages simultaneously through VRT MAX so listeners can navigate between performances much like they would on the festival grounds themselves, according to VRT's own coverage announcements. The station even runs afterparty programming from The Hive, the Rock Werchter campsite, keeping its DJs on air for five nights after the main stages go quiet.

A listener-built countdown that became its own station

Studio Brussel's cultural reach goes beyond festival coverage. Since 1987, the station has run the Tijdloze 100, an annual listener-voted countdown of the best songs of all time, a tradition significant enough that VRT eventually spun the entire back catalog into a standalone 24-hour digital channel, De Tijdloze, launched in 2018. That a single annual broadcast could generate enough listener investment to justify its own permanent station says something about how closely Flemish audiences follow what Studio Brussel plays.

Belgium's alternative pulse since 1983

From rush-hour beginnings to festival-season omnipresence, Studio Brussel has stayed the place Belgian listeners turn to for rock, metal, hip-hop, and electronic music that other stations pass over. Listen to Studio Brussel free on Radio Shuffle to hear more than forty years of Flemish alternative radio, still broadcasting live.
