The Station That Invented Radiovisione
RTL started in 1975 in Bergamo as Radio Trasmissioni Lombarde, founded by Leonida Sporchia, before Lorenzo Suraci bought the station in 1987 and still runs it today as president. Suraci became the pioneer of radiovisione, broadcasting a radio signal and a television signal of the same show at the same time, a format RTL 102.5 was the first Italian station to bet on, according to a profile of Suraci in Affari Italiani. The model proved influential enough that Swiss broadcaster RSI later adopted the same simulcast approach.

That bet paid off at a national scale. RTL 102.5 drew 5,971,000 average daily listeners in the first half of 2023 according to TER survey data, making it, by its own description, "la prima Radiovisione d'Italia." The network was also the first private Italian radio station to build its own dedicated newsroom, a step that gave it editorial weight well beyond a typical music station.
