The Parish Station Built So Elderly Listeners Could Still Hear Mass

Listen Now

Radio Maria did not start as a network, or even as an ambition to become one. It began in 1982 as a small parish radio station in Erba, a town in Italy's Como province, built for one specific, modest purpose: letting elderly parishioners who could no longer make it to church every day still participate in Holy Mass. That single act of local care eventually grew into one of the largest religious broadcasting operations on earth.

From a Parish Project to a Formal Association

The parish station ran quietly for five years before the Radio Maria Association was formally established on January 12, 1987, registered at Via Milano 12 in Erba, the address the organization still lists as its headquarters. Emanuele Ferrario became the Association's first president that year, a role he held until 2015, and he is credited with building the technical and administrative structure that allowed what had been one town's parish radio to expand across all of Italy and, eventually, every inhabited continent.

The Priest Who Became the Voice

Father Livio Fanzaga, a member of the Piarist Fathers, had already been involved with the small Erba station since 1986 before becoming its director in 1988. He remains the station's most recognizable voice decades later, having guided Radio Maria Italy's programming through its transformation from a single local frequency into the flagship of a global network, all while keeping the station's original devotional core, Mass broadcasts, rosary recitations and Catholic teaching, intact.

Building a World Family

In 1998, on Radio Maria Italy's own initiative, the organization founded the World Family of Radio Maria, the umbrella structure that now coordinates roughly 1,500 transmitters across 86 countries, almost all of it funded directly by listener donations rather than diocesan or Vatican budgets. Every national Radio Maria station around the world, from Panama to the Philippines, traces its organizational roots back to the model built in that one Como province town.

Still the Flagship, Decades Later

What makes Radio Maria Italy worth tuning into is not just its historical status as the mother station of a global movement, it is the fact that the format has barely changed from its original mission. The same instinct that built a parish radio station for homebound elderly listeners in 1982 still drives the programming today, even as that signal now sits at the center of a network spanning the entire world.
