Founded by the musicians it still champions
Rockland Radio has an origin story most stations cannot claim: it was founded by the artists whose genre it exists to serve. According to reporting on the station's founding, musicians Marius Müller-Westernhagen, Scorpions, Peter Maffay and Klaus Lage set up the company Deutsches RockRadio in the late 1990s, with the explicit goal of giving rock music a real foothold in a German radio landscape dominated by pop. Their first nationwide program under the Rockland Radio name launched on August 1, 1998.
Rock stars as broadcasters, not just guests
That founding detail matters because it inverts the usual relationship between musicians and radio. Rather than simply being played on a station, artists like Scorpions and Peter Maffay helped build the institution itself, a direct bet by established rock names that the genre needed its own dedicated outlet rather than scattered airplay slots on general pop stations.
A new owner, a wider reach
Ownership shifted in January 2011, when Steffen Müller and his company HKM Medien GmbH took over the majority stake and operational responsibility for Rockland in Rheinland-Pfalz, having already taken a similar role at Radio 21 in Niedersachsen. Today the station operates as part of the Deutsches Städte-Network headquartered in Mainz, reaching listeners across Rheinland-Pfalz and into neighboring Hesse and Baden-Württemberg.
A rock mission that outlasted its founders' direct involvement
More than a quarter century after Müller-Westernhagen, Scorpions, Maffay and Lage set the project in motion, ROCKLAND.fm is still running on the same basic premise they built it for: German rock deserves airtime that pop radio was never going to give it. The ownership has changed, the network has grown, but the station's entire reason for existing traces directly back to a handful of rock musicians who decided to stop waiting for someone else to build it.
