Germany's Pop and Rock Hall of Fame Station

Listen Now

egoFM Fame streams classic rock and the biggest names in pop history free on Radio Shuffle, running as a dedicated side-channel of egoFM, the Bavarian youth and discovery station known across Germany for championing music outside the mainstream. Where the main egoFM signal hunts for new sounds, Fame looks backward, treating pop history itself as something worth broadcasting around the clock.

Born From a Project Called "Radioblut"

egoFM exists because Bavaria's media regulator decided the region needed a station built specifically to connect young listeners with radio. On May 8, 2008, the Medienrat der Bayerischen Landeszentrale für neue Medien chose a concept called Radioblut over 24 competing bids, awarding it five FM relay frequencies in Munich, Nuremberg, Augsburg, Würzburg and Regensburg that had previously belonged to the defunct station Radio Melodie, according to coverage of the launch. The station went to air under the name egoFM on November 21, 2008, aimed at listeners between 20 and 49 rather than teenagers, and built its identity around discovering music that bigger commercial stations tend to ignore.

A Hall of Fame Built One Artist a Day

Fame grew out of a specific editorial project rather than launching as a finished format. Starting in September, egoFM began presenting one legendary artist a day across its platforms, building what it now calls its Hall of Fame, a running list that has grown past 60 names spanning rock pioneers like the Beatles, Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones, soul and funk figures including Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye and Nina Simone, early hip-hop acts like N.W.A and A Tribe Called Quest, and international names from Kraftwerk to Austrian pop icon Falco, according to egoFM's own rundown of the project. Listeners can even suggest additions by Facebook, email or WhatsApp, turning the list into something closer to a crowd-curated museum than a fixed canon.

Surviving Insolvency

egoFM's future looked uncertain less than two decades after it signed on. The operating company behind the station ran into serious financial trouble, and June 30, 2025 was set to mark the end of the station entirely. Munich-based Medienpiraten GmbH stepped in and took over broadcasting operations that July, keeping egoFM and its family of side-channels, Fame included, on the air rather than letting a station built specifically to champion overlooked music become overlooked itself.
