The station did not move into regular FM operation until 18 October 1999, and only reached the Augsburg region on 87.9 MHz in April 2002, a slow build that put it years ahead of the digital curve it eventually rode to national reach.
From One Bavarian Signal to a National Network
Rock Antenne's expansion since then has been steady rather than sudden: cable transmission across Bavaria in 2000, a Munich FM frequency in 2017 alongside a new DAB+ rollout in Baden-Württemberg, Hamburg operations in 2018, and full nationwide DAB+ availability across Germany by 2020, with an Austrian DAB+ service added in 2019. The station is majority owned by Antenne Bayern GmbH, which holds an 81.5 percent stake, with regional broadcaster NWZ Funk und Fernsehen holding the remainder. As of 2022 figures, the main Rock Antenne brand reached roughly 298,000 listeners during weekday peak hours.
One Genre Gets Its Own Stream
Rather than folding every metal track into its general classic and hard rock format, Rock Antenne carved out separate thematic streams, including dedicated channels for Heavy Metal, Punk Rock and Deutschrock.
