Radio38 plays adult contemporary pop and rock alongside regional news for Braunschweig and Wolfsburg in Lower Saxony, Germany. You can stream it live and free right now on Radio Shuffle, wherever you are in the world.
A Station Named After a Postcode
Radio38 takes its name from the postcode region 38, the core of its coverage area around Braunschweig and Wolfsburg, according to the German Wikipedia entry on the station. It is a private regional broadcaster licensed by the Lower Saxony state media authority, and its slogan, "Wir sind die Region," which means "We are the region," sums up the whole idea.
On Air Since January 2015
The station began broadcasting on January 28, 2015, with its first news bulletin at 8:38 in the morning after weeks of music-only test broadcasting, as Radioszene reported at the launch. Program director Swen Wudtke, who had previously worked at ffn, Antenne Thueringen and RPR, promised more information from the region and more variety in the music. Radioszene noted an unusually high share of spoken word for a private station, roughly a quarter of an hour of each prime-time hour.
What You Will Hear
The 24-hour programme mixes adult contemporary and middle-of-the-road music aimed at listeners between 20 and 60, and puts local reporting front and centre. The station is heard on FM in Braunschweig and Wolfsburg, on DAB+ since July 2023, and online, which is how you can reach it from anywhere.
Rooted in the Region
Radio38 is owned largely by local partners. FUNKE Medien Niedersachsen, the Volksbank BRAWO cooperative bank and a company called Radio 38 Freunde are its main shareholders. Braunschweig itself, the city of Henry the Lion, whose bronze lion statue still stands on the Burgplatz, is a fitting home for a broadcaster that leans so heavily on regional pride.
