A Frequency That Started as Something Else Entirely
The 104.7 signal has been on air in Kelowna since 1964, when it launched as CJOV-FM playing classical and semi-classical music, a world away from the guitar-driven sound it carries today. The call letters changed to CHIM-FM in 1978, then to CKLZ-FM in 1989, and by the mid-1990s the station was known on air as The Lizard, according to a detailed broadcast history of the station.
Pattison Buys In and Power 104 Is Born
In 1999, after Jim Pattison Industries acquired the station, CKLZ relaunched with a classic rock format under a new name, Power 104. The branding outlasted at least one format shift, since the station moved from classic rock to active rock in 2007 but kept the Power 104 name through that change, a sign of how much the identity had already taken hold with Okanagan listeners.
Back to The Lizard, Decades Later
Pattison Media eventually brought the original Lizard branding back to the Kelowna airwaves, a move tied to the station picking up broadcast rights to the Kelowna Rockets for the 2024-2025 WHL season. Six decades after a classical music launch, the frequency now runs full circle, carrying mainstream rock under the same name Kelowna rock fans grew up with in the 1990s, with the Power 104 years sitting in between as the identity that bridged the two Lizard eras.
