Licensed as Canada's First Nations Radio

CFNR's call letters stand for Canada's First Nations Radio, and the station earned its broadcast license on July 20, 1992, when the CRTC granted Northern Native Broadcasting approval for an English and Native-language station based in Terrace. The following year brought approval to run a 92.1 MHz transmitter at 43 watts, replacing an earlier CFNR signal and setting up the station most listeners know today.

A Signal Reaching 70 Communities

What started as a single Terrace transmitter has grown into a province-wide rebroadcast network. CFNR now carries its signal to more than 70 First Nations communities across northern and central British Columbia, with an estimated audience topping 150,000 listeners, broadcasting roughly ten hours a week in Indigenous languages including Haida, Gitksan and Nisga'a alongside its English-language schedule.

Classic Rock Meets Cultural Broadcasting

Day to day, CFNR runs on a classic rock format, but its schedule is built around the calendar of Indigenous life in the region. The station covers Hobiyee, the Nisga'a new year celebration marked by canoe journeys and dance, National Indigenous Peoples Day, and the All-Native Basketball Tournament, one of the largest Indigenous sporting events in Canada, giving northern communities a station that plays the hits while keeping their own events and languages on the air.
