A collective, not a single DJ
Cobra Team is less one radio station than a rotating roster of acts sharing a single stream. Its own site lists more than a dozen named shows taking turns on air, including Kobus FM, Radio Vuurzee, Radio IJsbeer, PC Radio and Radio Rono, each carrying its own name and identity under the Cobra Team banner, broadcast live with listener requests taken over WhatsApp.
Born from a culture of tens of thousands of transmitters
That patchwork structure makes sense once you know the Dutch tradition it grew out of. According to a history of European pirate radio, after offshore stations like Radio Veronica were forced off the air by the 1974 Strasbourg anti-piracy treaty, Dutch listeners turned to a wave of illegal land-based transmitters instead, with estimates of the land pirate scene running as high as 15,000 stations at its peak in the 1970s and 1980s. The eastern Netherlands in particular kept that culture alive for decades afterward, long after the offshore ships went quiet.
When a hobby signal reaches an airport
That tradition is not without real consequences. One of the shows carried on Cobra Team's own schedule, Radio IJsbeer, made German news in 2021 when the Bundesnetzagentur shut down an illegal FM transmitter broadcasting under that name near Cologne, after it was found to be interfering with radio traffic at Amsterdam's Schiphol airport. The regulator warned the operators could face a fine of up to 500,000 euros, a reminder that the pirate radio spirit these shows celebrate has always carried genuine legal and technical risk alongside its DIY charm.
Keeping the renegade spirit alive online
By moving that same scene onto a Twitch stream and a shared internet relay, Cobra Team gives a long line of small, unlicensed Dutch broadcasters a legal home and an audience that does not depend on dodging the regulator. It is pirate radio's attitude kept intact, minus the transmitter mast and the risk of a knock on the door.
