Melphis FM plays hits from the 1970s through the 2000s across a young Brazilian network that has gone from a single small-town frequency to national satellite distribution in under two years. The name on the dial does not mean anything at all, which turns out to be exactly the point.

A Name Chosen for Being Easy to Remember

Melphis FM launched in August 2022 when its parent group took over a station in Três Corações, Minas Gerais, previously known as Pop FM on 105.9, according to reporting from Tudo Rádio. The name Melphis carries no particular meaning in Portuguese or otherwise, chosen instead because it was simple and easy for listeners to remember, a deliberately blank slate for a brand that was about to expand fast.

From One Small Station to a National Signal

The network's real turning point came in February 2024, when its head office and lead station opened in São José dos Campos, São Paulo, and started transmitting its programming by satellite to affiliates across Brazil. That São José dos Campos signal runs on 88.3 FM, a frequency the group acquired from the former Rádio Capital FM in neighboring Caçapava, and today covers São José dos Campos, Jacareí, Caçapava and the surrounding Vale do Paraíba region. The broader Melphis network now includes affiliates in Campinas, Ribeirão Preto, Passa Quatro and Varginha, stitching together stations across São Paulo and Minas Gerais under one programming feed generated from its São José dos Campos headquarters.

Four Decades of Hits as the Common Thread

What holds that patchwork of affiliates together is a shared format built around major hits from the 1970s, 80s, 90s and 2000s, the kind of broad nostalgia programming that travels easily between cities with very different local identities. Rather than building each affiliate around its own regional sound, Melphis leans on decades of chart hits familiar across generations and state lines, a format built to network cleanly rather than reflect any one city in particular.

A Network Still Being Built in Real Time

Melphis FM's growth from a single Minas Gerais frequency to a satellite-fed, multi-state network happened in roughly eighteen months, a pace unusual even by the standards of Brazil's fast-moving regional radio market. Its affiliate program continues to open new stations to independent operators around the country, meaning the map behind the studio's satellite feed is still very much a work in progress.
