Pop Radio From the Valley That Grows Half of Mexico's Strawberries

Listen Now

LOS40 Zamora streams pop hits in Spanish and English at 88.1 FM, broadcasting under call sign XHZN-FM from Zamora, Michoacán. It is one of four stations run locally by Grupo Radio Zamora, affiliated with Cadena RASA and Radiópolis, and the only one carrying the LOS40 chart-pop format into this particular corner of western Mexico.

Four Decades on the Dial

XHZN received its broadcast concession on May 30, 1980, originally assigned to 92.1 MHz, according to Wikipedia's history of the station. It later shifted to its current frequency of 88.1 FM in the early 2000s, running at 10,000 watts of effective radiated power, and now sits alongside Grupo Radio Zamora sister stations Catedral de la Música, Candela and La Zamorana across the city's dial.

Broadcasting From Mexico's Strawberry Capital

Zamora rose to regional prominence after 1825, when it became the capital of western Michoacán, and consolidated its role as the area's commercial and service hub through the mid-20th century. Today the Zamora valley produces more than half of Mexico's entire strawberry harvest, enough to have overtaken the Bajío region as the country's leading strawberry-growing area, built on roughly 5,000 hectares of cultivated fields that export fruit well beyond Mexico's own borders.
