Founded to Export an Island's Sound
Ibiza Sonica launched in 2006, founded by DJ Igor Marijuan and event organizer Miguel Valverde with a specific goal in mind: build a non-commercial station able to carry Ibiza's musical identity beyond the island itself. Sonica Club is one of the network's dedicated livestream channels, based in Ibiza Town in the Balearic Islands, focused squarely on high-energy dance and electronic tracks built for the club floor rather than the more relaxed lounge or Balearic blocks the wider station also carries.
Built on a Sound the Island Invented
The genre Sonica Club leans on didn't arrive from outside Ibiza, it was largely invented there. In the 1980s, DJ Alfredo's residency at the club Amnesia blended disco, pop, rock and house into what became known as the Balearic beat, an eclectic mixing style that historians credit as a direct ancestor of modern electronic dance music, according to accounts collected by Discover Ibiza. That foundation carried into the 1990s superclub era, when venues including Amnesia, Pacha and Space turned the island into a global destination and helped popularize techno through residencies like Sven Väth's Cocoon nights.
From the Dance Floor to the Rest of the World
British club-goers who experienced that scene firsthand carried it home with them. DJs including Danny Rampling and Paul Oakenfold, who had spent time on the island, launched nights like Shoom and Spectrum back in London, spreading Balearic-influenced house music well beyond Ibiza's shores, per the same history. Ibiza Sonica's founding decades later followed that same instinct through a different medium, using the internet rather than club tourism to move the island's sound outward, and Sonica Club is the piece of that broadcast built specifically for the dance floor rather than the beach.
Recognition Beyond the Island
Ibiza Sonica has picked up international recognition for that approach over the years, including honors from Deejay Mags and the International DJ Awards, along with a Best International Radio award at the International Radio Festival in 2012. Sonica Club represents the most direct version of that mission: club music, streamed from the place that helped invent the modern club scene, sent out continuously rather than saved for one summer season.
