Built city by city across Poland
ESKA ROCK did not launch nationally overnight. According to a history of the station, it began broadcasting in Poznań on 22 November 2004, reached Łódź and Warsaw on 5 September 2005, and arrived in Kraków on 20 March 2006, gradually assembling a genuine national FM footprint city by city rather than launching with blanket coverage. By 2008 that expansion had grown the station to a presence in 18 Polish cities, cementing its status as the country's biggest dedicated rock signal.
Losing FM, surviving online
That footprint did not last. On 2 December 2013, ESKA ROCK's owner, Grupa Radiowa Time, swapped the station's FM frequencies with those of its own VOX FM brand, pushing ESKA ROCK off traditional radio entirely and into an internet-only existence. Rather than disappearing, the station kept its identity and audience alive purely as a stream for roughly a decade, proof that a strong enough rock brand could survive without a single FM dial position to its name.
Back on the airwaves through a rival's shutdown
ESKA ROCK's FM story did not end there either. On 27 March 2024, the station's owner acquired its rock radio rival Muzo.fm from Telewizja Polsat, and on 2 July 2024 Muzo.fm was shut down entirely, with ESKA ROCK stepping into its former frequencies. A station that had spent a decade as an internet stream effectively won back its place on the dial by absorbing the competitor that had replaced it.
A genre built on breadth, not purism
ESKA ROCK's own programming philosophy spans classic rock staples alongside the newest hits in modern, indie and alternative rock, treating the genre's full range as one continuous playlist rather than splitting eras into separate stations. That breadth is likely part of why the brand survived its own decade in FM exile: a rock station built wide enough to hold a real audience's attention on a stream alone.
