delta radio Föhnfrisur streams hard rock and heavy metal out of Kiel, Germany, a genre-specific offshoot of a station whose own name only exists because two other names got shot down first. Even the offshoot's name is a joke, a wink at the exact hairstyle that came to define the genre it plays.

Two Names Rejected Before the Third Stuck

delta radio first went on air on July 1, 1993, but it almost launched under a completely different identity. According to the station's own account of its history, it was originally set to be called "Radio Eins," a plan NDR successfully blocked. The team's backup, "alpha radio," ran into the same problem when a company owned by media mogul Leo Kirch objected to the name. Rather than risk a third rejection, the station turned the decision over to its own listeners, running a naming contest that produced the name it has carried ever since: delta radio.

A Metal Channel Launches Decades Later

The dedicated hard rock and heavy metal stream, Föhnfrisur, arrived far more recently, going live in 2014 out of the same Kiel studios as the main station, broadcasting nationwide over digital platforms rather than sticking to delta radio's traditional Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg FM footprint.

Named After the Genre's Most Famous Hairstyle

The name itself is a deliberate joke. Föhnfrisur translates roughly to "blow-dried hairstyle," a direct reference to the teased, hairspray-heavy manes that defined glam and hair metal throughout the 1980s, the look bands like Whitesnake, Poison and Mötley Crüe built entire visual identities around. Rather than a generic hard rock label, the channel's name pokes fun at its own genre's most recognizable, and most mocked, visual trademark.

A Station Built on Naming Jokes, Twice Over

delta radio's own name survived two legal objections before a listener contest settled it, and decades later its metal offshoot chose a name that turns an entire era's hairstyle into a punchline. Föhnfrisur plays it straight musically, hard rock and heavy metal, classic and current, but the branding never stops winking at the genre it loves.
