Launched by a library, not a broadcaster
WFPK has an origin story that is unusual even by public radio standards. The station was established in 1954 by the Louisville Free Public Library as a classical music outlet, a sister station to WFPL, according to Wikipedia's history of the station. In 1975 it absorbed the classical record library of WHAS-FM after that station dropped the format, giving WFPK an even deeper archive to draw from for two more decades of classical programming.
A 1993 merger that changed everything
The real turning point came in 1993, when the library merged WFPK and WFPL with the University of Louisville's WUOL-FM to form the Public Radio Partnership, the organization that would later become Louisville Public Media. That reorganization pushed WFPK through a gradual format evolution, moving first through jazz, folk, and blues before settling into the adult album alternative sound that defines its schedule today.
Live music as the station's identity
WFPK built its reputation as much on live performance as on its playlist. The station's Live Lunch series has hosted in-studio sets from acts including The Decemberists and My Morning Jacket, while its weekend program Woody's Roadhouse digs into R&B, country, blues, and gospel heritage music. Longtime host John Timmons also carried that concert tradition into Louisville's Lonesome Pine Special series, which ran at the Kentucky Center's Bomhard Theater from 1984 through 2000 and brought national acts like Lyle Lovett, k.d. lang, and They Might Be Giants through town alongside rising local talent.
