30 lat RMF FM, which translates to "30 years of RMF FM," is a channel built entirely around a milestone: the anniversary of Poland's first private radio station. Rather than just marking the occasion with a press release, RMF FM turned its own history into a listening experience, and this stream is where that history lives.

An artistic tribute to RMF FM's 30th anniversary blending Kraków and vintage radio equipment

Born in Two Kraków Apartments

RMF FM's origin story is about as scrappy as private radio gets. According to the station's own retrospective coverage and industry accounts collected by PKB24, the station launched on January 15, 1990, in Kraków as Poland's first private radio broadcaster, at a moment when the entire concept of independent media in the country was brand new. Its founder, Stanisław Tyczyński, had previously run Radio Solidarność Małopolska, an underground opposition station that operated outside the reach of Communist-era state censorship. RMF FM's earliest broadcasts came literally from two private apartments in Kraków, using improvised setups and equipment hauled in by truck. The first song ever played on air was "Africa" by Toto, a detail the station has kept alive as part of its own founding myth ever since.

From Living Rooms to a National Network

Within eight months the operation moved to a proper base near Kraków's Kościuszko Mound, and the growth from there was fast. In February 1994, Poland's National Broadcasting Council granted RMF FM a nationwide license, and by May of that year it became the first Polish station to receive nationwide concession rights with permission for local programming splits. Within three years the station had built a network of fifteen local branches producing their own newscasts, along with foreign correspondents, a scale no competing private broadcaster in Poland could match at the time.

An Archive Built for the Occasion

To mark the 30th anniversary in January 2020, RMF FM built a dedicated portal, 30lat.rmf.fm, gathering over a thousand articles, thousands of photos and video clips, and thousands of archival audio recordings spanning the station's full history. This radio channel grew out of that same anniversary push, part of the RMF ON family of online stations, giving listeners a way to actually hear the station's evolution rather than just read about it.

Why the Anniversary Still Resonates

RMF FM's rise from two apartments to a station wholly owned today by Germany's Bauer Media Group tracks almost exactly with Poland's own transition from state censorship to an open media market. Listening to 30 lat RMF FM is less about nostalgia for its own sake and more about hearing that transition play out in real time, one broadcast at a time.
