Radio Nowy Świat streams music, talk, and culture live from Poland, an independent station built by journalists who walked out of state radio rather than accept censorship. You can stream it free anytime on Radio Shuffle.
Born From a Censorship Scandal
The chain of events that created Radio Nowy Świat started in May 2020, when Polish Radio's Program 3, known as Trójka, invalidated an entire broadcast of its weekly listener-voted hit chart after a protest song by Kazik Staszewski, criticizing then prime minister Jarosław Kaczyński, topped the vote. According to coverage of the scandal, station management claimed the song appeared through a voting irregularity, a justification that triggered the resignation of Marek Niedźwiecki, who had hosted that same chart show for more than 35 years, along with several other longtime Trójka journalists and presenters.
Plans for a new, independent station surfaced within weeks of that walkout, funded directly by listeners through the crowdfunding platform Patronite rather than state or advertiser backing. Radio Nowy Świat went on air on Friday, July 10, 2020, built around some of the same voices who had just left Polish Radio behind.
From a Dream to a Stable Media Company
Veteran broadcaster Wojciech Mann, one of the presenters swept up in the Trójka departures, became a face of the new station's morning programming. Half a decade on, the station's own leadership has described it as having grown from what began as essentially a dream into a stable media business, a notable outcome for a station that started with no advertisers and no state funding, only direct listener support.
What You'll Actually Hear
Expect music, talk, and cultural programming shaped by journalists who left Poland's state broadcaster specifically to build something answerable to listeners rather than political management.
Radio Nowy Świat is free to stream on Radio Shuffle alongside thousands of other stations from around the world. Press play for the Polish station that grew out of a chart-rigging scandal.
