Radio Shuffle (radio-shuffle.com) is a free web app that plays random live radio stations from around the world. It is run by Patrick Goubet ("I"). This page explains what information Radio Shuffle collects, why, who else receives it, and what you can do about it. It covers radio-shuffle.com, including the FAQ and the radio station articles under /radio/.
The short version
- You can listen without an account. Radio Shuffle then keeps your activity under a random ID, with no name and no email address.
- If you sign up, I store your email address. I never see your password.
- Your username, level and ranking are visible to other listeners. Your email address never is.
- I do not sell your personal data.
- You can delete your account yourself, in Account, and that deletes your data.
What Radio Shuffle collects
If you just listen (no account)
The first time you visit, Radio Shuffle creates a random anonymous ID and a generated username (something like "CosmicBeat77") and keeps the ID in your browser. On my servers it then stores, under that ID: how many times you shuffled and on which days, how long you listened to each station each day, the stations you saved, the songs you identified, your level and ranking, and when you were last active. There is no name and no email address.
If you create an account
You can sign up with an email address and a password, or with Google. Signing in is handled by Firebase Authentication, a Google service. Radio Shuffle stores your email address, whether it has been verified, which sign-in method you used and Firebase's ID for your account, and links them to your existing activity so it follows you between devices. Your password is handled by Firebase; I never see or store it.
Google sign-in and Google user data
If you sign in with Google, Radio Shuffle uses only the email address of your Google account, plus the account ID that Firebase assigns to it. They are used to create and identify your Radio Shuffle account and to send you the account emails described below. Radio Shuffle does not ask for access to your Google contacts, Gmail, Drive, calendar or any other Google data. It does not use Google user data for advertising, does not sell it, and does not share it with anyone except the service providers listed below that are needed to run your account. Radio Shuffle's use of information received from Google follows the Google API Services User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements. You can delete your account at any time, which deletes this data.
What other listeners can see
Your username, level and place in the rankings are shown to other listeners, and songs you identify appear in the Trending Songs list with your username and the station they came from. You can change your username in Account. Your email address is never shown.
Song identification
When you tap Identify, Radio Shuffle sends the address of the station stream you are playing to a song-recognition service I run, which uses the AudD music-recognition API to work out what is playing. Your microphone and your device's audio are never used. The result (title, artist, station and links to music services) is saved with your ID and shown in your list of songs. A copy of the song and station, without any information about you, is also sent to that service to build the community lists.
Server logs
Like any website, the servers that host Radio Shuffle log technical details of each request, such as the IP address, browser type and page requested. My hosting provider does this for security and to keep the site running. Radio Shuffle's own database does not store IP addresses.
Browser storage and cookies
Radio Shuffle keeps data in your browser's local storage rather than in its own cookies: your anonymous ID, saved stations, identified songs, listening times, volume and interface preferences. While you are signed in, Firebase also keeps a sign-in token in your browser. Google Analytics and Google's advertising code (below) set their own cookies. You can clear all of this in your browser settings. If you do that while signed out you lose your anonymous ID and start fresh, whereas an account keeps your data safe across devices.
Analytics and advertising
Analytics. Radio Shuffle uses Google Analytics, a service of Google LLC, to count visits and understand how the site is used: pages viewed, approximate location, device and browser, how you arrived (a search, a link or an ad) and what you click. Google may use cookies and identifiers for this. You can opt out with Google's browser add-on.
Advertising. The site loads Google AdSense code, and I may also advertise Radio Shuffle on Google. If Google shows ads on Radio Shuffle, Google and its partners may use cookies and similar technologies to show and measure them, including personalised ads where the law allows. You can manage this in Google's Ads Settings. If you reach Radio Shuffle from one of my Google ads, Google records that visit so that I can measure the ad.
Who else handles data
- Google: Firebase Authentication (sign-in), Google Analytics, AdSense and Google Ads, Google Fonts, and the Firebase code files served from Google's servers.
- Brevo: sends Radio Shuffle's emails. It receives your email address and the message, and may record delivery and link clicks.
- Hostinger: hosts the website and its databases.
- AudD: receives a sample of station audio to recognise a song. It receives no information about you.
- Public content networks such as cdnjs, which deliver icon files and therefore see your IP address.
- Radio stations: when you play a station, your browser connects directly to that station's streaming server, which can see your IP address and that you are listening. Each station's own privacy policy applies.
Some of these providers process data in other countries, including the United States. I do not sell your personal data, and I do not share it except as described here or where the law requires.
Emails
Radio Shuffle sends email to account holders from noreply@radio-shuffle.com: address verification, password reset, a welcome message and occasional updates about Radio Shuffle. You can switch updates off at any time with the unsubscribe link in any email or the Notifications switch in Account. Verification and password-reset emails are still sent, because they are needed to run your account.
How long data is kept, and deleting your account
Account and activity data are kept until you delete your account. Signed-in users can do this themselves in Account, then Delete account. That deletes your profile, your email address, your saved stations, identified songs, listening and shuffle history, your ranking, and the record of emails sent to you, and it closes your sign-in account. Activity recorded under a random ID with no name or email is kept while Radio Shuffle runs; if you would like it removed, contact me. My hosting provider and Google keep their own logs and analytics data on their own schedules.
Why I use your data
I use it to run Radio Shuffle for you (your account, saved stations, history, level and ranking, and the trending lists, which are built from what listeners do), to keep the site secure and working, to understand how it is used and improve it, to send the emails described above and to measure advertising. Where the GDPR or UK GDPR applies, my legal bases are providing the service you asked for and my legitimate interests in running, securing and improving Radio Shuffle and in keeping account holders informed, which you can switch off at any time.
Your rights
Depending on where you live (for example the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or California), you may have the right to access, correct, delete or restrict the use of your data, to object to it, to receive a copy of it, and to withdraw consent you have given. Signed-in users can delete their account themselves. For anything else, email goubet.patrick@gmail.com and I will aim to reply within 30 days. You also have the right to complain to your local data protection authority.
Children
Radio Shuffle is not directed at children under 13, and I do not knowingly collect their personal information. If you think a child has given me personal information, contact me and I will delete it.
Security
Radio Shuffle is served over HTTPS and passwords are handled by Firebase. No system is perfectly secure, so I cannot guarantee absolute security.
Changes to this policy
If I change this policy I will update the date at the top, and I will say so on the site if the change is significant.
