Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about discovering new music with Radio Shuffle

Quick Navigation

Getting Started

Radio Shuffle is a free music discovery platform that connects you to over 30,000 radio stations from around the world. Instead of algorithm-based recommendations like Spotify or Apple Music, you discover new music through real radio stations curated by passionate DJs and music lovers worldwide. Click shuffle, and instantly start listening to a random station - it's that simple!

Discovering new music is easy! Click the pink "Shuffle" button to instantly connect to a random radio station from my collection of 30,000+ global stations. If you hear a song you love, use the built-in song identification feature to save it. Don't like what you're hearing? Click shuffle again for a completely different station and genre.

Yes! Radio Shuffle is 100% free with no subscription, no premium tier, and no hidden costs. You get unlimited access to 30,000+ radio stations, song identification (3 per day), station saving, sharing features, and more - all completely free forever.

No account needed! Everything saves directly to your browser using local storage. Your saved stations, identified songs, and listening history stay private on your device. No email, no password, no personal data collection - just pure music discovery.

Music Discovery

Radio Shuffle offers over 30,000 radio stations from more than 150 countries worldwide. This includes every music genre imaginable - jazz, classical, hip-hop, EDM, rock, world music, folk, electronic, talk radio, and everything in between.

The key difference is discovery method. Spotify and Apple Music use algorithms that recommend music similar to what you already like, creating an "echo chamber" effect. Radio Shuffle connects you to real radio stations curated by human DJs worldwide, exposing you to truly new music, genres, and artists you'd never encounter through algorithmic recommendations. Plus, it's completely free!

Currently, Radio Shuffle focuses on serendipitous discovery - each shuffle is completely random. This is intentional! It helps you discover music from genres and countries you might never explore otherwise. You might shuffle from a Brazilian bossa nova station to a Japanese rock station to a German techno station - that's the magic of true musical exploration.

As often as you like! Some users shuffle multiple times per session to explore variety, while others listen to one station for hours. I recommend giving each station at least 30-60 seconds before shuffling - you might catch an amazing song just around the corner. Use the gamification system to track how many stations you've explored!

Song Identification

The song identification uses AudD's audio recognition technology. When you hear a song you love, click the star icon (⭐) button. AudD analyzes the audio stream and identifies the track, showing you the song title, artist, and links to Apple Music and Spotify where available.

Very accurate! AudD's technology can identify most commercially released music playing on radio stations. However, accuracy depends on audio quality, background noise, and whether the song is in the database. Independent artists, live performances, or very obscure tracks may occasionally not be identified.

You get 3 free song identifications per day. This limit resets at midnight local time. Your daily credits are displayed on the identification button. This limit helps manage API costs while keeping Radio Shuffle free for everyone.

Identified songs are automatically saved to your "Your Discoveries" tab for future reference. They're also anonymously contributed to the "Community Discoveries" section (without personal data), helping other users discover great music. Each identified song includes links to Apple Music and Spotify so you can add it to your library.

Yes! Check the "Community Discoveries" tab to see the top 20 songs recently identified by Radio Shuffle users worldwide. It's a great way to discover popular tracks across different stations and genres.

Saving & Organization

When you find a station you love, click the "Save Station" button (heart icon). The station is saved to your browser's local storage and appears in your "Saved Stations" tab. You can access your saved stations anytime, and Radio Shuffle even tracks how much time you've spent listening to each one!

All your saved stations, identified songs, and preferences are stored locally in your browser using localStorage. This means your data stays on your device - I don't store it on my servers. Your privacy is protected, but remember: clearing your browser data will delete your saved information.

No, because data is stored locally in each browser. Your saved stations on your laptop won't appear on your phone. However, you can share stations between devices using the "Share" button, which creates a link you can open on any device.

In your "Saved Stations" tab, hover over any station and click the X icon that appears. The station will be removed from your saved list immediately.

Technical & Compatibility

Yes! Radio Shuffle works perfectly on mobile browsers (iOS Safari, Android Chrome, etc.). The interface is fully responsive and optimized for mobile. For an app-like experience, add Radio Shuffle to your home screen using your browser's "Add to Home Screen" feature.

No, Radio Shuffle streams live radio stations, so an active internet connection is required. However, data usage is minimal - similar to streaming music on Spotify or Apple Music.

iOS devices control audio volume at the system level using the physical volume buttons. Web apps like Radio Shuffle cannot override this Apple restriction. Use your device's volume buttons to adjust the sound.

Radio Shuffle works on all modern browsers: Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, and Opera. I recommend using the latest browser version for the best experience. JavaScript must be enabled.

Occasionally, stations may be temporarily offline, experiencing technical issues, or have geo-restrictions. If a station doesn't load, Radio Shuffle automatically tries up to 5 different stations. If problems persist, try clicking shuffle again or check your internet connection.

Features & Gamification

Radio Shuffle includes a fun gamification system that tracks your music discovery journey! Every time you shuffle, you earn points toward the next level. Progress through 7 levels: Beginner → Lover → Master → Fanatic → Star → Superstar → Legend. Your current level and shuffle count are displayed in the top-right corner.

Level up by shuffling stations! Here's the progression:

  • Beginner: 1 shuffle
  • Lover: 2 shuffles
  • Master: 10 shuffles
  • Fanatic: 20 shuffles
  • Star: 40 shuffles
  • Superstar: 60 shuffles
  • Legend: 100 shuffles

Your shuffle count is tracked automatically and persists in your browser.

Absolutely! Click the "Share" button on any station (saved or currently playing) to generate a shareable link. You can share via Email, SMS, WhatsApp, Facebook, X (Twitter), LinkedIn, TikTok, or copy the direct link. When friends open your link, the station loads automatically and is pre-saved for them.

The three tabs organize your Radio Shuffle experience:

  • Community Discoveries: Top 20 songs identified by users worldwide
  • Your Discoveries: Songs you've personally identified
  • Saved Stations: Your favorite radio stations with listening time tracked

You can pin any tab as your default view by clicking the pin icon.

Privacy & Data

I only track minimal data for functionality:

  • Local browser storage: Your saved stations, identified songs, and listening times (stored on YOUR device, not on my servers)
  • Google Analytics: General site usage metrics (page views, country, device type) - no personal identification

No data is sold, shared, or used for advertising targeting.

Radio Shuffle uses localStorage (browser storage) instead of traditional cookies to save your preferences and data. I do use Google Analytics cookies for site analytics. No personal information is collected or stored.

Yes! Since all data is stored locally in your browser, you can delete it anytime by clearing your browser's cache/localStorage. Or simply stop using the site - no account means no lingering data on my servers.

Tips & Best Practices

Here are my top tips:

  • Don't skip too quickly - Give each station 30-60 seconds
  • Shuffle at different times - Morning, afternoon, evening stations vary
  • Use song identification - Save great discoveries to find similar artists later
  • Check Community Discoveries - See what others are finding
  • Save stations from unfamiliar countries - Explore international music
  • Embrace the unexpected - Some of the best discoveries are from genres you'd never choose manually

With 30,000+ stations, repetition is rare! The shuffle is truly random. If you notice patterns, it's likely coincidence. Keep shuffling - the next station could be from anywhere in the world!

Troubleshooting

Try these steps:

  • Refresh the page (F5 or Cmd+R)
  • Check your internet connection
  • Clear your browser cache
  • Try a different browser
  • Disable browser extensions that might interfere (ad blockers, etc.)

Audio quality depends on the radio station's streaming quality - Radio Shuffle doesn't alter the audio. Some stations stream at higher bitrates than others. If quality is important, try shuffling to find high-quality stations and save them.

Some radio stations provide minimal metadata. Radio Shuffle displays whatever information the station broadcasts. You can still use the song identification feature to identify what's playing!

About Radio Shuffle

I'm Patrick Goubet, a music enthusiast and software developer who grew frustrated with Spotify's algorithmic echo chamber. After realizing I was hearing the same music repeatedly, I built Radio Shuffle to rediscover the joy of unexpected musical finds - just like scanning FM radio as a teenager, but with 30,000+ stations worldwide instead of a dozen local ones.

Currently, Radio Shuffle doesn't make money - it actually costs me to run (server hosting, database, and the AudD song identification API). For now, I'm providing it completely free because I love music discovery and want to share it with others. In the future, I may add non-intrusive advertising solely to cover infrastructure costs, but I'm committed to keeping the core experience free and user-friendly.

Yes! The core features - unlimited shuffling, station saving, and basic functionality - will always be free. I may explore optional ways to cover infrastructure costs (like non-intrusive ads) in the future, but the music discovery experience you love will remain free forever.
