A frequency with roots back to Havana

The station now known as Z92 first signed on December 22, 1969, running through earlier call signs WHMS and WQXK before settling into WCMQ-FM, according to Wikipedia's history of the station. The WCMQ call letters were chosen deliberately to echo CMQ, the storied Havana broadcaster from before the Cuban revolution, tying the Miami station directly to Cuban exile radio heritage even as it broadcast a very different format decades later. It operated on 92.1 MHz from 1969 until 1987 before eventually settling permanently on 92.3 FM.

Willy Chirino gave the new format its voice

The station relaunched as Z92 on April 1, 2012, dropping its previous WCMQ Clasica identity for a salsa-forward format aimed squarely at South Florida's Hispanic adults in the 25-to-64 demographic, according to a press release announcing the launch. International salsa star Willy Chirino became the station's new imaging voice, lending his own name recognition in the genre to a rebrand built specifically around "Zalsa y Mas." That relaunch paid off: WCMQ-FM went on to rank as the number one most listened-to Hispanic station in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood market, according to a later Spanish Broadcasting System announcement.

Owned by one of the biggest names in Spanish-language radio

Z92 is part of Spanish Broadcasting System, one of the largest Hispanic media companies in the United States, giving the station the backing of a network with a long track record across major Latino markets. That scale, paired with a genuinely Miami-specific sound built around salsa and tropical music, has kept the station relevant in a South Florida radio market that includes some of the most competitive Spanish-language stations in the country.
