Finland's Most-Listened Radio Channel, Explained

Listen Now

Yle Radio Suomi is the flagship channel of Finland's public broadcaster Yleisradio, playing popular music, sport, news and phone-ins in Finnish, with regional programmes for different parts of the country. You can listen live through Yle Areena in Finland, and here on Radio Shuffle, where the Helsinki stream is free to play from anywhere in the world.

What Yle Radio Suomi Broadcasts

According to Wikipedia's entry on the channel, Radio Suomi's main focus is music and sport, alongside news, phone-in programmes and up to eight hours a day of regional programming on weekdays. It is also known for live coverage of music festivals. The channel broadcasts on FM between 93.1 and 100.3 MHz and is owned by Yleisradio, funded through public service rather than advertising.

Finland's Most-Listened Station

A study reported by Yle News in February 2024 found that Yle Radio Suomi was the most-listened-to station in Finland, accounting for 34 percent of all radio listening time in 2023, with commercial rival Radio Nova in second place among private stations and Yle Radio 1 third. For a country of about five and a half million people, it is the closest thing to a common radio soundtrack.

From Second Network to Radio Suomi

Radio Suomi launched on 1 June 1990 as part of a restructuring of Yleisradio's radio services. It succeeded Rinnakkaisohjelma, established in 1960, and Kakkosverkko, the name it carried from 1985, according to Wikipedia. In 2003 the channel shifted its music policy to attract younger listeners, and today it works from studios in Helsinki's Pasila and Tampere, with a network of regional news desks that give different parts of Finland their own local bulletins.

Regional Voices Inside a National Channel

Finland is a long, thinly populated country, so regional programming matters. The Radio Suomi stream on Radio Shuffle is the Helsinki feed, tagged to the capital region, while other regional variants exist for cities such as Tampere, Oulu and Turku. That structure gives listeners news that fits where they live inside a shared national schedule.
