A regional voice inside Finland's biggest network
Etelä-Pohjanmaa's regional desk sits inside Yle Radio Suomi, the national network created in a June 1990 restructuring of Finnish public broadcaster Yleisradio's radio services, which gives different parts of the country their own local news and programming alongside a shared national schedule. The region it serves, centered on the city of Seinäjoki, carries one of Finland's strongest regional identities, with its own distinct dialect blending western Finnish speech with pockets of Savonian influence in its eastern reaches.
Home to the world's oldest tango festival
Seinäjoki hosts Tangomarkkinat, billed as the world's oldest tango festival, alongside Provinssirock, one of Finland's longest-running rock festivals, giving the region an outsized music festival footprint for its size. The city is also home to the Aalto Center, a cluster of civic buildings designed by South Ostrobothnian-born architect Alvar Aalto, and locals still wear the Jussipaita sweater as a recognizable symbol of regional identity.
