Xtra Hot grew out of Hot Radio, the Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole community station that began life as The Bay 102.8 after Ofcom granted it a community radio licence in 2007. The station launched on air on 8 November 2008 and rebranded as Hot Radio in 2012, according to a history of the station on Wikipedia. Hot Radio has no shareholders; it runs as a community asset operated largely by volunteers for the towns it serves, and Xtra Hot was built within that same group as the dedicated outlet for dance and urban sounds the main station's schedule could not fit.

Where Hot Radio's main feed leans toward broad local output, Xtra Hot keeps its programming squarely on dance music, with named blocks like Xtra Chilled running the early hours before Xtra Overdrive takes over through the day.
