WMHT Classical 89.1 broadcasts classical music around the clock from Schenectady, New York, serving the Capital District with orchestral works, chamber music, and public radio programming from NPR, APM, and PRX. It is one of the longest-running classical formats in American public radio, and you can stream it free anytime on Radio Shuffle.

A Format Born From a Protest

WMHT-FM signed on June 8, 1972, and claims a genuine first: it was the first noncommercial station in the country to adopt an all-classical format at signon. The backstory is very upstate New York. When commercial station WFLY dropped its classical programming in 1970, it set off a protest from classical listeners in the Capital Region who did not want to lose the format entirely. Around the same time, WAMC had already claimed the area's NPR affiliate slot, so when the Mohawk-Hudson Council, the organization behind WMHT, looked for a different lane, classical music was the natural answer. They paid Siena College's WVCR-FM to vacate the 89.1 frequency and built the station from there.

WMHT-FM shares its roots and ownership with WMHT TV, the PBS member station on channel 17 that signed on back in 1962 as only the second educational television station in New York State, after WNED in Buffalo. The Mohawk-Hudson Council itself dates to 1953, originally formed with backing from commercial station WRGB and its then-parent company General Electric, which was headquartered in Schenectady.

More Than Five Decades of Classical Programming

The station's schedule still reflects that original mission of serious, well-curated classical listening. Bach's Lunch brings Baroque music to weekday middays, Serenade offers a late-evening mix of nocturnes, adagios, and andantes, and WMHT Live features full recordings of recent classical concerts from around the Capital District, giving regional performers a broadcast home alongside the standard repertoire.

That local-performance focus matters. Public classical stations like this one are often the only place a regional orchestra or chamber ensemble gets broadcast exposure, and WMHT has kept that door open for more than fifty years while also carrying national NPR, APM, and PRX programming for listeners who want news and cultural coverage alongside the music.

What You'll Actually Hear

Expect a steady rotation of orchestral, chamber, and solo classical repertoire, anchored by named programs at set times rather than an anonymous playlist, plus public radio news and talk segments woven in around the music. It is a station built for listeners who want classical music treated as a serious, living tradition rather than background noise.

WMHT Classical 89.1 is free to stream on Radio Shuffle alongside thousands of other stations from around the world. Press play for a format that has outlasted most of its commercial-era peers.
