Four Call Signs Before It Ever Settled Down
The frequency carrying WFLA 100.7 today didn't start out as a talk station, or even under that name. The FCC granted a construction permit for a new Tallahassee-area FM outlet in 1991 under the placeholder call sign WTPS, according to Wikipedia's history of the station. Paxson Communications originally held that permit, but Clear Channel Communications bought it before the station ever signed on. When it finally launched in 1996, it did so as WJZT, a call sign chosen specifically to reflect its smooth jazz format.
Smooth Jazz to Hits to Urban Contemporary
The jazz format didn't last. Around 1997, the station pivoted to a mix of 1980s and 1990s hits, then changed its call letters to WOKL in 1999. By 2002 it had rebranded again as WBWT, running an urban contemporary format that stayed on the air until July 10, 2006, three format changes and three call sign swaps in roughly a decade.
Borrowing a Name From Tampa Bay
The flip that finally stuck came in July 2006, when management switched the station to talk radio and adopted the call letters of its Tampa Bay sister station, WFLA, adding an "-FM" suffix to distinguish the two. That borrowed identity has held for nearly two decades, longer than any of the frequency's three previous format eras combined.
A Local Morning Show Inside a National Network
WFLA 100.7 runs its own local news and interview program each weekday morning, hosted by Preston Scott, before handing off to nationally syndicated talk programming largely sourced from Premiere Networks. Fox News Radio updates open most hours, and the station shares the bulk of its talk lineup with its Tampa Bay namesake while keeping its morning drive distinctly local to Tallahassee.
