A regional voice with roots in a 1950 station
WDR 2 Südwestfalen is one of several regional feeds within WDR 2, a network that traces back to NWDR UKW West, launched on 30 April 1950, before becoming WDR 2 under the newly formed Westdeutscher Rundfunk when North Rhine-Westphalia split off its own broadcaster on 1 January 1956.
Iron, forests and a Rubens connection
The name Sauerland first appears in a document from 1266 as "Suderland," most likely meaning simply "southern country," according to Wikipedia's entry on the region, which today ranks as North Rhine-Westphalia's largest tourist destination for mountain biking, cycling and water sports across its hilly, heavily forested terrain. To its south lies the Siegerland, for centuries one of Germany's major iron-working centers, whose wealth helped shape Siegen, a city sometimes nicknamed "Rubens City" after its most famous native son, the painter Peter Paul Rubens, whose work is held today in the Siegerlandmuseum inside the city's Upper Castle.
