Born from a station split by state politics
WDR 2 traces back to 30 April 1950, when it launched as NWDR UKW West, the western regional service of Nordwestdeutscher Rundfunk, a broadcaster covering Hamburg, Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein and North Rhine-Westphalia, according to Wikipedia's history of the station. North Rhine-Westphalia decided in 1955 to run its own broadcaster rather than stay under the shared NWDR umbrella, and when that broadcaster split formally on 1 January 1956, the western service became WDR 2 under the newly formed Westdeutscher Rundfunk, while the northern equivalent became NDR 2 under Norddeutscher Rundfunk.
Broadcasting over Europe's densest industrial heritage
The Ruhrgebiet that WDR 2 Ruhrgebiet serves spent more than a century as Germany's coal and steel heartland, with over two hundred working pits and dozens of blast furnaces at its mid-20th-century peak. Today the region markets itself as having Europe's densest cultural landscape, with roughly a thousand industrial monuments, two hundred museums and a 400-kilometre Route of Industrial Heritage linking 54 former industrial sites, according to coverage from Germany's national tourism board. The Zollverein coal mine complex in Essen, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the best-known example of that transformation from heavy industry into concert venues, theatres and museums, a shift the region leaned into fully when it served as European Capital of Culture in 2010.
