One regional feed within a station born in 1950

WDR 2 traces back to NWDR UKW West, which went on air on 30 April 1950 as the western regional service of Nordwestdeutscher Rundfunk. When North Rhine-Westphalia chose to establish its own broadcaster in 1955, the western feed became WDR 2 under Westdeutscher Rundfunk on 1 January 1956, and that network has run regional variants like this one for its different corners of the state ever since.

A flat countryside built for castles and cyclists

Münsterland is known for two things above all: more than a hundred castles and moated manor houses, and a landscape flat enough to explore almost entirely by bike. The region's 100 Schlösser Route links its grandest estates, including Nordkirchen Castle, sometimes nicknamed "Westphalia's Versailles," while a roughly 4,500-kilometre network of cycle paths, including small rural routes locally called "Pättken," makes the whole district one of Germany's most popular regions for touring by bicycle, according to a cycling guide to the Münster region. At the center of it all sits the city of Münster itself, a university town with more than 1,200 years of history behind its current role as a lively student hub.
