The Album That Changed Italian Rock

Italian alternative rock has a genuine before-and-after moment, and most critics point to the same record. Afterhours released Hai paura del buio? in 1996, an album widely credited with permanently shifting Italian rock's direction, and Rockit's own reader polls have ranked it the single most important Italian album of the following fifteen years. Few genre scenes anywhere can point to one specific record as cleanly as Italian alternative rock points to this one.

A Lineage Running Through CCCP

That 1996 breakthrough didn't appear out of nowhere. CCCP stood alongside Litfiba as the defining band of Italy's alternative and punk scene in the 1980s, and when the group split, members Giovanni Lindo Ferretti and Massimo Zamboni founded CSI in 1990, renewing the sound and image their earlier band had built. Marlene Kuntz picked up that thread in the early 1990s as one of Italy's first noise rock bands, drawing heavily on Sonic Youth and on CCCP's own legacy, releasing their debut Catartica shortly before Afterhours' landmark record arrived.

Milan's Electronic-Rock Hybrid

Not every alternative act of the era worked in guitar-driven noise rock. Bluvertigo formed in Milan in 1992 and built a genuinely distinct sound mixing electronic music, rock and new wave influences, proof that Italy's alternative scene had room for bands working well outside the Afterhours and Marlene Kuntz noise-rock lineage.

Taking the Underground to Sanremo

By 2000, the scene was confident enough to confront the mainstream directly. Afterhours brought a project called Il Paese È Reale to the Sanremo Festival, Italy's biggest and most traditional music stage, specifically to spotlight an alternative scene that had, by then, started calling itself indie rather than alternative.
