Born From Garage, Blues and Psychedelia

Hard rock's earliest roots trace to the mid-1960s garage, blues rock and psychedelic scenes, well before it became its own recognizable genre. By the late 1960s British bands had fused that earlier rock sound with something harder and more blues-based, and Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple are usually named as the genre's defining pioneers, pairing distorted blues guitar with forceful, propulsive drumming.

Italy Got the Records Before It Had the Bands

That British sound reached Italy through an unusually direct channel: young Italians who traveled to London in the late 1960s and early 1970s brought British albums home with them, carrying Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin records directly into the Italian rock scene before homegrown hard rock really had its own identity. That record-collecting pipeline mattered more than radio or television in shaping what Italian rock fans actually heard from the genre's British originators.

Deep Purple's Own Hardening

Even Deep Purple's hard rock identity wasn't set from day one. Guitarist Ritchie Blackmore and bassist Roger Glover reportedly pushed the band to chase Led Zeppelin's own blues-riff intensity, a push that led directly to the album Deep Purple in Rock, the record that cemented the band's reputation in the genre rather than as a looser psychedelic act. Even one of hard rock's two most-cited founding bands was still actively defining its sound against the other.

The Heavier Branch That Split Off

Where Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple represent hard rock's more straightforward blues-driven lineage, Black Sabbath pushed the sound further into darker, heavier territory, with albums from their debut era, especially 1970's Paranoid, often cited as the point where that heavier branch split off into what would eventually become heavy metal.
