Virage Radio Légendes du Rock streams a strict diet of 60s, 70s and 80s rock, the kind of station where Van Halen, Europe and Dire Straits rotate without ever giving way to whatever is charting this week. What makes it an odd survivor is its own name. The FM station it grew out of does not answer to Virage Radio anymore.

Born Out of a Swiss Radio Dispute

Virage Radio launched on May 13, 2009, on FM in Lyon, Grenoble, Chambéry and Chamonix, taking over the frequencies after Groupe Espace acquired the French rights to Couleur 3 and a dispute with Swiss public broadcaster RTS ended that station's French run. What began as a rock-leaning replacement for an imported Swiss format grew from a handful of Alpine cities into a much larger footprint, expanding onto DAB+ across roughly sixty zones in France starting in 2018.

A Sunday Night Show Given Its Own Channel

Among Virage Radio's programming was Les Légendes du Rock, a themed show airing every Sunday from 8pm to midnight and dedicated entirely to rock's back catalogue. Rather than leave that four-hour weekly slot to stand alone, the network spun it into a permanent, always-on stream, joining a small family of niche channels under the same roof, including Titans du Rock, Bleu Blanc Rock and Metal Mania, each built around a single, narrower slice of the main station's rock identity.

The Parent Station Moved On

In April 2024, the FM station that gave this channel its name stopped using it. Seven months after Lagardère handed the Virgin Radio brand over to Europe 2, French regulator Arcom approved Espace Group's request to rename its Virage Radio network to Virgin Radio, a switch that took effect on April 15, 2024 at 4pm. The flagship FM signal in Lyon and beyond has broadcast as Virgin Radio ever since, while this themed online channel, Légendes du Rock, kept running under the old name, a small corner of the network's back catalogue of streams that never got the memo.

A Playlist Built to Never Need Updating

Because Légendes du Rock draws from decades that are already closed, the 60s through the 80s, its programming does not depend on new releases or chart positions to stay relevant. A station anchored in Van Halen, Europe and Dire Straits does not need this year's rock hits to keep its identity intact, which may be exactly why the name attached to it mattered less to Espace Group than the brand carrying its current hits and news.

Still Carrying the Old Sign

Most rebrands wipe out the old name entirely. Here, a single themed stream kept broadcasting under a name its own parent company retired, less a leftover than a small, deliberate corner of the network still labeled the way it always was, playing rock legends for listeners who came for exactly that and never needed the name to change.
