Vinyl FM plays what its own tagline calls "fantastisk musik som aldrig blir gammal," fantastic music that never gets old, built around ABBA, Michael Jackson, Madonna and the rest of the 60s-through-80s canon. It is one of Stockholm's oldest surviving commercial stations, and its existence traces directly back to a piece of Swedish legislation most listeners have never heard of.
Born Out of a 1993 Law
Sweden did not have licensed local commercial radio until the Act on Local Radio Broadcasting, SFS 1993:120, passed under a center-right government that had taken office the year before. The law let the Swedish Broadcasting Authority auction off local licences for eight-year terms, and bidding wars in big cities pushed some concessions to well over three million kronor, according to a study of the period's commercial radio finances. Vinyl FM launched into that newly opened market in Stockholm in 1994, originally as Vinyl 107, named for the 107.1 MHz frequency it first broadcast on according to Wikipedia.
From 3.6 Percent to Radio Station of the Year
The station grew its share of the Stockholm radio market from 3.6 percent at launch to 5 percent, a meaningful climb in a city that had suddenly gone from zero commercial stations to dozens competing for the same ears. That growth culminated in March 2003, when Vinyl FM was named Radio Station of the Year by the Radio Awards jury, a recognition of a format that had by then settled into exactly the oldies lane it still occupies.
Two Cities, One Sound
Vinyl FM broadcasts on 105.9 FM in Stockholm and 103.8 FM in Linköping, making it one of the few Swedish oldies stations to hold onto a genuine two-city footprint rather than consolidating into a single signal. Bauer Media's own station page still frames it as two stations sharing one format, a structure that has outlasted plenty of local competitors from that same 1990s licensing wave.
Consolidation Around It, Consistency Within It
Sweden's local commercial radio landscape has consolidated hard since 1993. What began as four networks with national ambitions narrowed down to essentially two, MTG Radio and Bauer Media, with Bauer now controlling roughly three quarters of the country's hundred or so commercial licences. Vinyl FM rode that consolidation into the Bauer portfolio without losing the oldies identity that set it apart from Stockholm's newer, more contemporary-leaning stations.
Three Decades of the Same Promise
More than thirty years after Vinyl 107 first went on air under a brand-new licensing law, Vinyl FM is still selling the same idea, that the biggest hits of the 60s through the 80s do not need updating to hold an audience. In a Stockholm radio market that has changed ownership structures, frequencies and formats many times over since 1994, that consistency is close to a rarity.
