One of Sydney's First Two FM Signals
Triple M Sydney began broadcasting on August 2, 1980, as callsign 2MMM, one of the first two commercial FM stations in Sydney alongside 2Day FM, according to Wikipedia's history of the station. The name itself came from the station's three-songs-in-a-row policy, giving it the "Triple M" branding that would eventually grow into a 45-station national network.
Doug Mulray and Dr Dan
The station built its early identity around rock programming and Doug Mulray's breakfast show, which drove strong 1980s ratings, while a promotional character called Dr Dan, a guitar-playing satyr, became a visual mascot for the brand through the 1980s and 1990s. Later breakfast hosts, including Andrew Denton and Amanda Keller, kept the morning slot competitive into the late 1990s, with Keller's run bringing particular ratings success.
From "Awesome '80s" Back to Rock
The station briefly experimented with an all-80s format in October 2008 before relaunching that December as "The All New Triple M," targeting a younger 25 to 39 demographic under the banner "Music That Rocks," the identity it has carried since. That shift followed a run of sports-personality-driven shows including The Cage, The Shebang, and The Grill Team, which kept the station's talk content tied closely to Sydney sports culture even as its music format evolved.
