The Station That Had to Buy Its Own Name From a Community Radio Rival

Before Triple M Adelaide ever played a single rock song under that name, the call sign 5MMM belonged to someone else entirely. A community meeting at Adelaide's Box Factory Community Centre on July 2, 1978 drew over 250 people and led to the formation of the Progressive Music Broadcasting Association, a non-commercial group that won a broadcasting licence and claimed the callsign 5MMM in November 1979.

Adelaide Radio Lived Again

That community station went to air at midnight on December 21, 1979, opening with "Tomorrow Never Knows" by 801 Live and "Turn Up Your Radio" by the Masters Apprentices, before South Australian Premier Don Dunstan delivered the launch line that became local radio folklore: "Adelaide Radio Lived Again!" It was backed by real government money too, a 62,000 dollar seeding grant from Dunstan's administration plus a further 10,000 dollars from the Film Commission.

A Rival Network Had to Pay to Use Its Own Brand

Fourteen years later, the national Triple M network, then owned by Hoyts Media, bought a different Adelaide station, KAFM, and wanted to rebrand it under the Triple M name. There was just one problem: the callsign the network needed, 5MMM, already belonged to the community broadcaster. Hoyts ended up paying the community station directly for the rights to the name. The original 5MMM converted to a new callsign, 5DDD, clearing the way for KAFM to officially become 5MMM and launch as Triple M Adelaide on January 1, 1994.

A Brand Built on an Awkward Negotiation

It is an unusual way for a major commercial network to acquire a market identity, paying a nonprofit community broadcaster just to free up three letters. That history gives Triple M Adelaide a slightly different origin story than most of its sister stations in the national network, one rooted in a negotiated handover rather than a straightforward license win.
