A brand that has come and gone from Auckland
The Breeze name first appeared in 1993, when the Independent Broadcasting Company rebranded three separate local stations, 91FM in Auckland, Kiwi 898FM in Waikato, and Windy FM in Wellington, all under the same easy-listening identity, according to Wikipedia's history of the network. That first run in Auckland did not last. The Radio Network shut The Breeze down there and in Waikato in 1997, repurposing the frequencies to launch 91ZM and 89.8ZM instead.
Built into a national network under MediaWorks
The Breeze survived through its Wellington outpost, which passed to RadioWorks and then into CanWest's hands between 2000 and 2001. When CanWest merged its television and radio arms in 2004 to form MediaWorks, the company nationalised its local stations and began rebranding secondary markets under The Breeze name, before finally bringing the format back to Auckland in 2006. Today The Breeze broadcasts in 25 markets across New Zealand under MediaWorks ownership, a genuinely national footprint built out of a brand that had already been killed off once in its biggest market.
