Born from a 1998 merger
SWR3 itself came together when two older broadcasters, Süddeutscher Rundfunk and Südwestfunk, merged into Südwestrundfunk, with their respective pop stations SDR 3 and SWF3 combining into SWR3 on 30 August 1998. The station is produced in Baden-Baden and plays current pop and rock hits aimed at listeners between 14 and 49, built around the slogan "Einfach gute Musik," simply good music. Its mascot, a moose known as the SWR3-Elch, has become a recognizable piece of the station's branding over the years.
Germany's most-listened public radio station
That pop and rock format has made SWR3 the single most-listened-to public broadcaster radio programme in Germany, according to the 2019 Media-Analyse audience survey, a notable distinction in a country with dozens of regional public stations competing for the same listeners. SWR3 has also run the New Pop Festival in Baden-Baden every year since 1998, the same year the station itself launched, giving it a live-music event tied directly to its own history rather than a separately branded promotion.
