SWR1 Baden-Württemberg streams pop and rock hits spanning four decades, with a particular lean toward the 80s, from a studio in Stuttgart, reaching nearly two million listeners a day in the southwest German state. You can stream it free anytime on Radio Shuffle.

Two Broadcasters, One State, Separate for 46 Years

The station's backstory is a genuine artifact of postwar German history. Südwestfunk was founded in 1946 in the French occupation zone, while a separate broadcaster, Süddeutscher Rundfunk, was founded in 1949 in the American zone next door. When Baden, Württemberg-Hohenzollern, and Württemberg-Baden merged in 1952 to form the single state of Baden-Württemberg, these two broadcasting corporations were not merged along with it. They kept operating side by side, each running its own first channel, SWF1 and SDR1, for the next 46 years inside what was now a single state.

That changed on January 1, 1998, when Südwestrundfunk was formally created through the merger of SDR and SWF. SWF1 and SDR1 were consolidated into SWR1 Baden-Württemberg, broadcasting from Stuttgart as the region's unified pop and rock service, with a sister SWR1 Rheinland-Pfalz handling the broadcaster's other state.

Four Decades of Hits, One Audience

SWR1 Baden-Württemberg's format is built around pop and rock hits from roughly the last forty years, with a notably heavy skew toward the 1980s, aimed at listeners between 30 and 55. That breadth, rather than locking into a single decade like many commercial competitors, has helped the station build an audience of close to two million daily listeners across Baden-Württemberg, a genuinely large reach for a regional public broadcaster.

That scale reflects the station's position as one of the two successor identities born from a uniquely German broadcasting quirk, a state that spent nearly half a century with two separate public radio corporations before finally consolidating into one.

What You'll Actually Hear

Expect pop and rock spanning the 1980s through today, skewed toward 80s favorites, aimed squarely at adults who grew up with that decade's biggest hits, delivered from Stuttgart with the production values of a major regional public broadcaster.

SWR1 Baden-Württemberg is free to stream on Radio Shuffle alongside thousands of other stations from around the world. Press play for four decades of hits from the heart of southwest Germany.
