Built by the man behind Houston's Madd Hatta Morning Show
The station is operated by Paid in Full Entertainment, the label and media company founded by Benjamin Thompson III, better known on air as Madd Hatta, according to the Wikipedia entry on his career. Thompson built The Madd Hatta Morning Show into a 20-year Houston institution on 97.9 The Box, hosting mornings from 2001 to 2019 after starting on the station's afternoon slot in 1995. Beyond radio, his Paid in Full Entertainment label helped launch the careers of then-underground Houston rappers Paul Wall and Chamillionaire, and his contributions to Texas radio earned him induction into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame in 2014.
A format built for listeners who grew up with the genre
The Super Throwback Party fits into what the radio industry calls the classic hip-hop format, a genre-specific lane focused on hip-hop from the 1980s, 90s, and early-to-mid 2000s aimed squarely at listeners who came up with those records the first time around. The format traces back to 2004, when a re-launched KDAY in Los Angeles leaned on the heritage of the original AM-dial KDAY, the first American station to play hip-hop full time in the 1980s, according to an overview of the genre's radio history. The format didn't really take off industry-wide until October 2014, when Radio One swapped a struggling news format for classic hip-hop at its Houston station and watched ratings jump, a result other broadcasters across the country quickly copied.
Houston roots running through the whole station
That Houston connection runs straight through The Super Throwback Party. Between old-school tracks from the 70s, 80s, and 90s, the station folds in entertainment news, sports, line dance features, and artist interviews, the kind of full-service programming built by someone who spent two decades running a morning show rather than just curating a playlist.
