Suburbia Parties - Athens Hardcore Radio streams the sound of a crew that has been running the Greek capital's oldschool hardcore and rave scene since the mid nineties. Long before it became a radio station, Suburbia was a collective of DJs and vinyl diggers who built a night out of one simple idea, that the music they loved deserved a room full of people to hear it with.
Seven People Who Wanted to Hear the Same Music Together
SUBURBiA formed in Athens in 1996 as a seven-member collective, and according to founding member D-Lusion in an interview with GLOWKiD, the whole project started from nothing more complicated than "the need to hear together the music we loved." That group, Bass-ic, D-Lusion, Keith, Limited, Nameless, Nasty and Pressure, adopted the motto Forever Young, Forever Hardcore and set out to build an audience for a sound that had almost nowhere else to go in the city at the time.
From a Shared Passion to the City's Own Hardcore Scene
The crew threw its first official event in 1997, a year after forming, and spent the years that followed positioning itself as a continuation of the broader international rave and hardcore movement rather than a one-off local night. According to the collective's own mission statement, the goal was to give Athens audiences the chance to dance to the music that shaped the dance mass movement over the years, built from vintage vinyl and DJ sets that mixed classic anthems with newer tracks.
A Sound Built Across Several Genres, Not Just One
Suburbia's catalog spans Old Skool Hardcore, Breakbeat, Happy Hardcore, Jungle, Drum and Bass and Gabba Hardcore, a range that reflects how those genres overlapped and fed into each other during the era the crew draws from. Member Pressure has continued producing oldschool hardcore, techno, gabber and jungle tracks under the Suburbia banner, keeping the crew's output active rather than treating the whole project as a nostalgia act frozen in the nineties.
Two Decades in, Still Filling the Same Room
Suburbia marked its 20th anniversary with a reunion party at The Place in Athens on February 24, 2017, bringing the original crew back together for a night built around the same crate of rare and classic tunes that started the whole project. Earlier milestone nights, including a Moving Shadow tribute and guest sets from DJs like Luna-C in the late 1990s, show a crew that has always leaned on bringing in respected names from the wider hardcore and jungle circuit rather than running a closed local operation.
Still Hunting for the Same Records
Nearly thirty years after seven friends decided they wanted a room to dance to the music they loved, Suburbia is still hunting down rare and classic hardcore vinyl for its sets. The radio station is the version of that mission that never has to end when the party does, playing the same oldschool hardcore, gabber and jungle that built the Athens scene the crew helped keep alive.
