Star FM New Metal exists because the flagship station it belongs to was never willing to just play it safe with rock radio. Star FM itself started in 1997, founded by David Dornier on Berlin's 87.9 MHz, a frequency previously held by the American Forces Network, and ran as a part-time service before switching to full 24-hour programming on April 16, 2006, according to the station's German Wikipedia entry. Under the slogan "Maximum Rock," it expanded from Berlin into Nuremberg, Saxony, and North Rhine-Westphalia, eventually pulling in a combined audience of well over 100,000 listeners across its main markets.

New Metal is one of the ways Star FM stretches beyond its FM frequencies. Alongside the terrestrial signal, the network runs more than a dozen genre-specific livestreams, including Alternative, From Hell, 80s Rock, 90s Rock, Blues, and Country Rock, letting fans dial into exactly the sound they want instead of waiting through a broader rock playlist for it, per the same source. New Metal is the hardest of that bunch, built entirely around contemporary metal and metalcore rather than the classic rock catalog that anchors the main FM broadcast.

German metal with its own accent

Recent Radio Shuffle listeners caught the stream playing "Blitzkreuz" by Callejon, the title track of the Dusseldorf metalcore band's fourth album. Callejon writes and performs most of its lyrics in German, and Blitzkreuz in particular leaned into industrial-tinged, Rammstein-adjacent production, a combination that landed the record at number 9 on Germany's official charts, according to a review from Reflections of Darkness. That track is a fair snapshot of what New Metal specializes in: contemporary, often German-language metal that draws as much from the country's own industrial and Neue Deutsche Harte lineage as from international metalcore.

A niche stream backed by a real broadcast network

What separates New Metal from a generic internet metal station is the infrastructure sitting behind it. It is not a hobbyist stream but one channel inside a licensed, multi-city FM operation that has been building its rock credibility since the late 1990s. That backing gives New Metal a level of programming consistency and reach that a standalone metal stream would struggle to match, while still letting Star FM's harder-edged fans get a channel built entirely around their sound instead of splitting time with the classic rock staples that dominate the company's main FM signal.
