Smooth Relax streams soft adult contemporary music from Australia, free on Radio Shuffle right now, no account or app needed. Expect mellow tunes built for unwinding, a mix of timeless soft hits and gentler modern tracks rather than anything built for a dance floor or drive time rush.
From Talk Radio to Soft Hits
The network behind Smooth Relax did not start out playing mellow music at all. It launched in 2005 as Vega, a talk-leaning Sydney and Melbourne station, before Nova Entertainment rebranded it as smoothfm in 2012, debuting with a 4.1 percent audience share across both cities, according to Nova Entertainment's own account of the station's history. That shift from talk to soft adult contemporary music set the template the network has built on ever since.
Built as a Digital Spinoff
Smooth Relax itself is a newer addition to that network. Nova launched it in 2019 as one of two new digital-only stations alongside Smooth Chill, extending the smoothfm brand beyond its main FM signal into Sydney and Melbourne's DAB+ digital tier. Smooth 80s and Smooth 90s followed as further decade-specific spinoffs in 2020, but Smooth Relax kept its focus on mood rather than era, built purely around a soft adult contemporary format for listeners who want calm over nostalgia.
A Niche Carved Out of a Crowded Dial
That mood-first approach gives Smooth Relax a clear identity next to its own sister stations. Where Smooth 80s and Smooth 90s sell a specific decade, Smooth Relax sells a specific feeling, wherever the songs happen to come from, a format built for background listening rather than close attention.
