How a Station That Started as Jazz FM Ended Up Playing Wham!

Listen Now

Smooth 80s did not start life as an 80s station, or even as Smooth. The name on air today is the third identity for a UK radio network that spent its first two decades built around a completely different genre before market research pushed it somewhere else entirely.

It Began as Jazz FM

The network behind Smooth 80s traces back to 4 March 1990, when it launched as Jazz FM, with a second regional Jazz FM station following in north west England in September 1994 as one of the UK's first five regional commercial stations. The jazz branding lasted for two decades before market research commissioned by then-owner GMG Radio found that the word "jazz" itself was actively putting listeners off. Rather than fight that perception, the stations rebranded as Smooth on 4 October 2010, keeping the easy-listening lean but dropping the genre label entirely.

A Bigger Owner, A Bigger Network

Smooth eventually came under Global, the media company that now owns and operates four of the network's seven FM licences directly, with the remaining three run by Communicorp UK as a franchise. That structure let a station born from a single jazz signal grow into a nationwide network with the resources to keep expanding well past its original format.

Twelve Stations in One Day

Smooth 80s itself only exists because of a much larger move. In September 2024, Global launched twelve brand new radio stations in a single day, described at the time as the biggest single launch in UK radio history, adding decade-specific spinoffs including Smooth 70s, Smooth 80s and Smooth Soul alongside existing sister stations Smooth Chill, Smooth Country and Smooth Relax. Smooth 80s launched with its own dedicated breakfast show, hosted by Nigel Freshman, built entirely around acts like Madonna, Wham! and Michael Jackson.

From a Genre Nobody Wanted to a Decade Everybody Does

The station's path says something about how UK commercial radio has learned to sell nostalgia. A jazz format got dropped because the word itself scared listeners off, while a decade-specific format launched three decades later with none of that hesitation, betting that "80s" needs no explanation to draw an audience. Smooth 80s is the version of that same network that finally stopped worrying about what to call its sound and just named it after the years it came from.
