France's Rap and Hip-Hop Radio Live

Listen Now

Skyrock plays rap, hip-hop, and R&B around the clock from Paris, reaching an estimated 3.2 million listeners a day in France, and you can stream it live and free on Radio Shuffle no matter where you are in the world. It is the station most credited with turning French rap from a niche genre into mainstream national radio.

From a rock station called "The Voice of the Lizard"

Skyrock did not start out as a rap station at all. It launched on 21 March 1986, founded by Pierre Bellanger alongside Frank Ténot and Daniel Filipacchi, built out of Bellanger's earlier station La Voix du Lézard, which had specialized in rock, new wave, and world music since 1983, according to details compiled by the City of Nancy's cultural magazine. The pivot came during the 1990s, when Skyrock made a deliberate bet on urban music, rap, and R'n'B at a time when French FM radio barely touched those genres.

Planète Rap and three decades of French hip-hop

That bet paid off through shows like Planète Rap, on air since 1996 and hosted by Fred Musa, which became one of the most important platforms for popularizing rap music across France, as detailed by researcher Olivia Maironis in her study of Skyrock and the emergence of French rap. Nearly every major French rap artist of the last three decades has passed through the show at some point, giving Skyrock a claim that few other national broadcasters anywhere can make: an entire national rap scene grew up partly because of a single radio program.

Radio Libre and the unscripted late-night hour

Skyrock's other signature format runs later at night. Radio libre, the free-form call-in show airing from 9pm to midnight, began on 7 July 1997 and grew out of an earlier free-form broadcast launched in 1992 by Lova Fun, Sillard, and Christian "Doc" Spitz, inspired by a California radio format, according to the French Wikipedia entry on the show. Host Difool, who had previously worked at Fun Radio, took over the slot in 1997 and later added a morning show in 2000 that was originally meant to run for just one month before listener demand kept it on the schedule permanently. By January 2018, Médiamétrie ratings showed Difool's Radio libre had overtaken competing shows on NRJ to become the leading program in its slot.

The sound of French rap, live and unfiltered

Between Planète Rap's guest list and Radio libre's unscripted energy, Skyrock has spent nearly four decades shaping how French audiences hear hip-hop. Listen to Skyrock free on Radio Shuffle to hear the station that helped build an entire national rap culture, still broadcasting live from Paris today.
