One of a wave of 2016 digital spinoffs
Skyrock rolled out 100% Français in October 2016 alongside sister web stations Urban Music Non-Stop and Klassiks, splitting its parent FM station's rap programming into dedicated, genre-specific digital feeds that run independently of the main broadcast schedule.
A dominant station with a rocky relationship to the genre it built
Skyrock became France's biggest rap station after turning to homegrown hip-hop in the 1990s, but its relationship with the artists it plays has rarely been smooth. The station denied Booba a slot on its flagship show Planète Rap in 2002, and the rapper eventually broke with Skyrock entirely in 2008 to launch his own web radio, OKLM. More recently, acts like PNL have refused to appear on the station at all, even as its airplay still shapes which French rap tracks reach the widest national audience. A channel like 100% Français sidesteps that drama entirely, running the music nonstop without the on-air feuds that have defined so much of Skyrock's history with the genre.
