SinterklaasRadio does not try to be a year-round station. It exists for one purpose and one season: soundtracking the weeks leading up to Sinterklaasavond, the December 5th gift-giving evening that Dutch children look forward to even more than Christmas itself.

Built Around a Tradition Centuries Old

The Sinterklaas festival traces back to Saint Nicholas, a fourth-century bishop from Myra, with written references to his Dutch feast day dating as far back as 1360. As The Dutch Ways explains, legend has Sinterklaas arriving by steamboat from Spain each mid-November, then traveling the country by horse to deliver gifts, while children leave their shoes by the fireplace hoping to find them filled by morning. It is a tradition old enough that SinterklaasRadio is, in a real sense, just the newest format for a story the Netherlands has been telling for over 650 years.

De Leukste Sinthits, On Repeat

The station's own tagline promises "de leukste Sinthits," the best Sint hits, pulling from a roster that includes Coole Piet, Muziekpiet, De Club van Sinterklaas and Junior Songfestival contestants, names that mean little outside the Netherlands but define the sound of the season for Dutch households with young children. Listeners can track what is currently playing and even submit song requests, feeding into an annual Sint Top 20 countdown of the season's most-requested tracks.

More Than Just a Stream

SinterklaasRadio.nl builds out a full seasonal universe around the music: coloring pages for kids, a recipe section covering traditional treats like pepernoten and speculaas, and video content alongside the audio stream. It runs in partnership with De Club van Sinterklaas and Studio 1980, and shares infrastructure with a sister project, Kerstradio24.nl, the Christmas radio equivalent that presumably picks up where Sinterklaas leaves off once December 5th has passed.

A Bigger Deal Than Christmas

For Dutch families, Sinterklaasavond is often the bigger event of the two December holidays, the night reserved for presents and surprises, while Christmas itself leans more toward a quieter family meal. That cultural weighting explains why a station dedicated entirely to Sinterklaas music can sustain a loyal audience even while operating on a strict, single-season calendar rather than running year-round like most radio stations do.

Gone Until Next November

Once December 6th passes, SinterklaasRadio's job for the year is essentially done, the shoes have been filled, the Sint Top 20 has crowned its winner, and the station can go quiet until Sinterklaas next steps off his steamboat. Few stations anywhere embrace such a deliberately narrow window this fully, built entirely around a few weeks that Dutch families wait for all year.
