Shine 879 calls itself the world's leading dance music station, but its roots sit in a much scrappier corner of British broadcasting: the East London and Essex pirate radio scene that built UK garage from the ground up. Long before it had a DAB license, Shine was an unlicensed transmitter fighting for airspace against dozens of other stations chasing the same sound.
Born Out of Pleasure FM
Shine started life as Shine FM in the summer of 1997, an underground pirate station broadcasting from East London and Essex. According to the station's own account on shinedab.com, it emerged directly from Pleasure FM, a pirate station that had been broadcasting on 88.3 and 87.9 FM since 1990 and had itself shifted from a dance format toward the emerging UK garage sound. Shine picked up that thread at exactly the moment UK garage was turning from a London pirate radio curiosity into one of the defining British sounds of the early 2000s.
An Early Mover Online
What separated Shine from many of its pirate contemporaries was how early it looked past FM. The station began streaming online in 2003, an unusually forward-thinking move for a pirate outfit at the time, and it simulcast with Raw FM in Bedfordshire and Cain FM in the United States, extending a local East London signal into something with genuine international reach. Shine also moved off the airwaves entirely for its biggest nights, hosting events at London venues including Scala and Ministry of Sound, and taking the brand as far as the Greek and Spanish party islands during the peak of UK garage's crossover into mainstream club culture.
Off Air, Not Gone
Shine FM stopped broadcasting on pirate frequencies in 2012, closing out fifteen years of unlicensed transmission. The station describes that period not as an ending but as a hibernation, and it kept a presence online rather than disappearing completely. That distinction mattered when the opportunity to broadcast legally finally arrived a decade later.
Back on Air, Legally
Shine returned as a licensed broadcaster on 26 February 2022, launching on the Essex NOW fm DAB multiplex under the name Shine 879, a nod to one of the frequencies Pleasure FM had used decades earlier. The relaunch proved to be the start of real expansion rather than a one-off: by August 2024 the station had added coverage across three further multiplex areas, extending its legal DAB signal into Surrey, Sussex, South London, Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire.
The Same Sound, a Legal Signal
Nearly three decades after it first crackled out of an East London transmitter, Shine 879 still centers its programming on house, UK garage and disco, the same genres Pleasure FM was playing when the Shine name first split off from it. The station's history traces a fairly direct line through UK garage's own arc, from illegal pirate broadcasts that built the genre's earliest audience to a fully licensed DAB station carrying that same sound to the South East of England today.
